RESUMO

Parasitic fauna of the White Sea cod, Gadus morhua marisalbi; the navaga, Eleginus nawaga; and the shorthorn sculpin, Myoxocephalus scorpius, in the White Sea was repeatedly studied, but no large-scale parasitological surveys have been made in the recent three decades. To fill this gap, we conducted a survey of the helminths of these three fish species at the White Sea Biological Station (Karelia, Russia) of the Lomonosov Moscow State University in August 2021. The navaga (50 specimens studied) was found to be infected with 13 species of helminths; the White Sea cod (50 specimens), with 12 species; and the shorthorn sculpin (21 specimens), with 13 species. Plerocercoids of Diphyllobothrium schistochilus and third-stage juveniles of Pseudoterranova bulbosa were recorded in the White Sea for the first time. The helminth infracommunities of the navaga and the White Sea cod were closer in structure to each other than to those of the shorthorn sculpin. In general, the levels of helminth infection of the White Sea cod, the navaga, and shorthorn sculpin have been consistently high over 85 years of observations in the White Sea, but long-term trends in the abundance of some helminth species were multidirectional.

RESUMO

This work aimed to study the efficacy and safety of the class III antiarrhythmic agent cavutilide (Niferidil, Refralon) for pharmacological cardioversion in patients with paroxysmal and persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF). METHODS AND RESULTS: In this retrospective cohort study, 58 patients with stable HF (aged 69 [61;73] years, 30 males, 78% with persistent AF) and 274 patients without HF (aged 63 [57;70] years, 196 males, 56% with persistent AF) were included. The median AF duration in the group with HF was 35.5 [10.6;124] days, and that in the group without HF was 14.5 [3.6;90] days. All patients received 5-30 µg/kg cavutilide intravenously in one to four (if needed) boluses of 5-5-10-10 µg/kg at 15 min intervals. Subsequent boluses were not administered if the patient's sinus rhythm (SR) was restored or if bradycardia, QT prolongation > 500 ms or evidence of proarrhythmia was observed. Holter electrocardiogram monitoring was started before infusion and was continued for 24 h. The main criterion for an antiarrhythmic effect was sinus rhythm restoration within 24 h of the initial bolus. RESULTS: Cavutilide converted AF to SR in 37.9% of patients with HF after bolus 1 (5 µg/kg), in 58.6% after bolus 2 (cumulative dose = 10 µg/kg), in 74% of cases after bolus 3 (cumulative dose = 20 µg/kg) and in 92.8% of cases after bolus 4 (cumulative dose = 30 µg/kg). Cavutilide was effective in 89% of cases with persistent AF with a median duration of 70.5 [30;159] days and in 92% of cases with paroxysmal AF with a median duration of 36 [24;102] h. In the group of patients without HF, the effectiveness of bolus 1 was 36.9%, that of the bolus 2 was 58%, that of the bolus 3 was 77% and that of the bolus 4 was 90.1%. Cavutilide restored SR in 90% of patients with persistent AF with a median duration of 82.5 [28;180] days and in 90% of cases with paroxysmal AF with a median duration of 50 [24;120] h. No statistically significant difference in the probability of SR restoration or the effectiveness of each bolus of cavutilide was found between patients with and without HF. The median time to restoration of SR in patients with HF was 23 [11;55] min, and that in patients without HF was 22 [10;45] min (p = 0.424). No cases of symptomatic/severe bradycardia were observed in either group. QT prolongation over 500 ms after cavutilide injection was registered in 19% of patients without HF and in 15.5% of those with HF (p = 0.58). Short runs of Torsade de pointes tachycardia occurred in one patient (0.4%) without HF after 10 µg cavutilide administration and were successfully treated with MgSO4. CONCLUSIONS: Cavutilide demonstrated a high likelihood of AF conversion to SR in paroxysmal (92%) and persistent (89%) arrhythmia and HF. Concomitant HF and its severity do not affect the efficacy and safety of cavutilide.

RESUMO

The Chinese sleeper Perccottus glenii Dybowski, 1877 is an invasive fish species rapidly expanding in Siberia and Europe. Its native range encompasses the Far East region of Russia, northeastern China and northern North Korea. We studied species composition, prevalence, mean abundance and variance of mean abundance of macroparasites of the Chinese sleeper in the native and the introduced range. The species composition of the parasite component communities differed considerably in the native and the introduced range. The frequency distributions of prevalence, mean abundance and variance of mean abundance of the parasites did not demonstrate any significant differentiation between the two parts of the host range. However, an analysis of the abundance-occupancy and the abundance-variance relationships revealed that the parasite component communities in the two parts of the host range were quite distinct. In the native range, prevalence increased faster and variance increased more slowly with the increasing abundance of the parasites than in the introduced range. These features are mostly associated with considerably increased prevalence, abundance and aggregation of the host-specific cestode Nippotaenia mogurndae in recipient water bodies as compared with the native habitats.

RESUMO

Metacercariae of Tylodelphys sp. were found in the abdominal cavity of the Chinese sleeper (Perccottus glenii) collected in Liaoning Province and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China. The sequences of the mitochondrial cox1 gene and ribosomal ITS1-5.8S rDNA-ITS2 region were obtained and used for molecular identification and phylogenetic assessment of this parasite species. Results of phylogenetic analyses based on ITS and cox1 markers showed that the metacercariae of Tylodelphys sp. ex P. glenii from China were conspecific with specimens of Tylodelphys sp. collected by Sokolov et al. (2013) from the same fish-host species captured earlier in West Siberia, Russia. The examined Tylodelphys sp. ex. P. glenii is the only member of the genus whose metacercariae parasitise the abdominal cavity of fish in northern Eurasia. Tylodelphys sp. ex P. glenii clustered with T. darbyi, T. immer, T. podicipina, and Tylodelphys sp. of Soldánová et al., 2017 based on mitochondrial DNA markers, and with T. darbyi, T. immer, T. kuerepus, and T. schreuringi using nuclear DNA markers.

RESUMO

The development of magnetoactive microsystems for targeted drug delivery, magnetic biodetection, and replacement therapy is an important task of present day biomedical research. In this work, we experimentally studied the mechanical force acting in cylindrical ferrogel samples due to the application of a non-uniform magnetic field. A commercial microsystem is not available for this type of experimental study. Therefore, the original experimental setup for measuring the mechanical force on ferrogel in a non-uniform magnetic field was designed, calibrated, and tested. An external magnetic field was provided by an electromagnet. The maximum intensity at the surface of the electromagnet was 39.8 kA/m and it linearly decreased within 10 mm distance from the magnet. The Ferrogel samples were based on a double networking polymeric structure which included a chemical network of polyacrylamide and a physical network of natural polysaccharide guar. Magnetite particles, 0.25 micron in diameter, were embedded in the hydrogel structure, up to 24% by weight. The forces of attraction between an electromagnet and cylindrical ferrogel samples, 9 mm in height and 13 mm in diameter, increased with field intensity and the concentration of magnetic particles, and varied within 0.1-30 mN. The model provided a fair evaluation of the mechanical forces that emerged in ferrogel samples placed in a non-uniform magnetic field and proved to be useful for predicting the deformation of ferrogels in practical bioengineering applications.

RESUMO

AIM: To prospectively investigate the associations of urinary phthalate metabolite concentrations measured at four time points spanning pubertal development with semen parameters in Russian men. DESIGN: 516 boys were enrolled at ages 8-9 years (2003-2005) and followed annually. METHODS: Urine samples were collected annually and pooled into four exposure windows [prepuberty, early puberty, late puberty and sexual maturity] based on physician assessed Tanner genitalia stages and testicular volume. Fifteen phthalate metabolites were quantified using isotope dilution HPLC-MS/MS at Moscow State University. We calculated molar sums (∑) of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), di-isononyl phthalate (DiNP), di-isodecyl phthalate (DiDP) and anti-androgenic phthalate (AAP) metabolites. At sexual maturity (ages 18-19 years), the men provided 1-2 semen samples for analysis. We estimated the associations of quintiles of urinary ∑phthalate metabolites as well as mono-butyl phthalate (MnBP), mono-isobutyl phthalate (MiBP), and mono-benzyl phthalate (MBzP) at each pubertal window, with semen parameters by fitting generalized linear mixed models with random intercepts and adjusting for confounders. RESULTS: A total of 223 men who provided semen samples had phthalates measured at one or more pubertal windows. Higher urinary concentrations of ∑DiNP metabolites during late puberty were related to poorer semen quality (men with the highest quintile of urinary ∑DiNP had 30% lower sperm concentration, 32% lower count and 30% lower progressive motile count, compared to men in the lowest quintile). Also, young men with higher urinary concentrations of MiBP metabolites in early puberty tended to have poorer semen quality. No associations were observed for ∑DEHP metabolites, ∑DiDP metabolites, ∑AAP, MBzP or MnBP metabolites with semen quality parameters. CONCLUSIONS: ∑DiNP metabolites measured during late puberty and MiBP metabolites at early puberty were related to poorer semen quality, highlighting the importance of considering specific windows of exposure when investigating chemical exposures in relation to measures of reproductive health in men.

RESUMO

Gymnophallus deliciosus is a type species of the genus Gymnophallus. We collected this trematode species from gallbladder of Larus argentatus caught in the White Sea (Kandalaksha Bay, Chupa Inlet) and obtained the sequences of its nuclear 18S and 28S rDNA genes. Our recently obtained phylogenetic data support a sister group relationship of this species with G. choledochus. However, other species of the genus Gymnophallus-G. australis (KM246854) and G. minutus (KM268111)-do not branch with the group G. choledochus + G. deliciosus or with each other. Our study revealed that the genus Gynmnophallus is probably a polyphyletic taxon, and the genus affiliation of its representatives should be re-examined in future.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although phthalate exposures have been associated with adverse effects on male reproductive health, few studies have explored longitudinal associations with male pubertal development. OBJECTIVES: We examined the association of prepubertal urinary concentrations of phthalate metabolites with age at pubertal onset in a prospective cohort of Russian boys. METHODS: At enrollment at ages 8-9 years, medical history, dietary, and demographic information was collected. At entry and annually, physical examinations and pubertal staging [Genitalia (G), Pubarche (P), and testicular volume (TV, in ml)] were conducted and spot urines were collected. Prepubertal urine samples (defined as either TV = 1, 2 and G = 1, 2 or TV = 3 and G = 1) were pooled for each boy and phthalate metabolite concentrations were quantified using isotope dilution LC-MS/MS at Moscow State University. We measured 15 metabolites including those from anti-androgenic parent phthalates (AAPs) such as di (2-ethylhexyl) (DEHP) and di-isononyl (DiNP) phthalates as well as monobenzyl (MBzP), mono-n-butyl (MnBP), and mono-isobutyl (MiBP) metabolites. We calculated the molar sums of DEHP (∑DEHP), DiNP (∑DiNP), and AAP (∑AAP) metabolites. Separate interval-censored models were used to assess associations of quartiles of prepubertal phthalate metabolites with each pubertal onset indicator, G2+, P2+ and TV > 3 mL, adjusted for covariates and urine specific gravity. RESULTS: 304 boys had 752 prepubertal urine samples (median 2, range: 1-6) for pooling. In adjusted models, higher urinary AAPs were consistently associated with later pubertal onset (P2) with mean shifts ranging from 8.4 to 14.2 months for the highest versus lowest quartiles. Significantly later onset for G2 and TV > 3 mL was observed for higher versus lower quartiles of MiBP, MBzP, ∑DEHP and ∑DiNP. CONCLUSIONS: On average, boys with higher concentrations of prepubertal urinary AAPs had later pubertal onset by six months to over a year. The impact of AAPs on timing of male puberty may be attributable to disruption of androgen-dependent biological pathways.

RESUMO

Modelling of patient-specific hemodynamics for a clinical case of severe coronary artery disease with the bifurcation stenosis was carried out with allowance for standard angiographic data obtained before and after successfully performed myocardial revascularization by stenting of two arteries. Based on a non-Newtonian fluid model and an original algorithm for fluid dynamics computation operated with a limited amount of initial data, key characteristics of blood flow were determined to analyse the features of coronary disease and the consequences of its treatment. The results of hemodynamic modelling near bifurcation sites are presented with an emphasis on physical, physiological and clinical phenomena to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach. The main limitations and ways to minimize them are the subjects of discussion as well. This article is part of the theme issue 'Transport phenomena in complex systems (part 2)'.

RESUMO

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease incurable due to late diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, one of the priorities of neurology is to study the mechanisms of PD pathogenesis at the preclinical and early clinical stages. Given the important role of sphingolipids in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases, we aimed to analyze the gene expression of key sphingolipid metabolism enzymes (ASAH1, ASAH2, CERS1, CERS3, CERS5, GBA1, SMPD1, SMPD2, UGCG) and the content of 32 sphingolipids (subspecies of ceramides, sphingomyelins, monohexosylceramides and sphinganine, sphingosine, and sphingosine-1-phosphate) in the nigrostriatal system in 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) mouse models of the preclinical and clinical stages of PD. It has been shown that in PD models, the expression of five of the nine studied genes (CERS1, CERS5, ASAH1, ASAH2, and GBA1) increases but only in the substantia nigra (SN) containing dopaminergic cell bodies. Changes in the expression of enzyme genes were accompanied by an increase in the content of 7 of the 32 studied sphingolipids. Such findings suggest these genes as attractive candidates for diagnostic purposes for preclinical and clinical stages of PD.

RESUMO

We found metacercariae of a microphallid trematode Atriophallophorus minutus in freshwater snails Bithynia tentaculata. In this study, we provide a morphological description of whole-mount specimens and semi-thin sections of experimentally grown adults of this species. Our morphological examination supports the idea that the adults of Atriophallophorus spp. have a ventral sucker with a sinistral interruption of the outer edge. In the 28S rDNA gene-based phylogenetic analyses, our specimens of A. minutus were grouped into Atriophallophorus spp. clade, as a sister taxon to Atriophallophorus winterbourni + Atriophallophorus sp. Analysis of the pairwise genetic distances between coI mtDNA gene sequences revealed a low divergence between the two specimens of A. minutus (1.1%) and a greater divergence (up to 16.6%) between them and A. winterbourni. Since other Atriophallophorus spp. are known to have a strict specificity to the polyvalent intermediate host, we suggest that A. minutus reported from different snail species may represent a complex of cryptic species.

RESUMO

Live oribatid mites of the family Malaconothridae were found on Salmo spp. parr caught in the rivers of Northwest Russia. The mites were localised in the gill filaments and enclosed in connective tissue capsules. The encapsulation was accompanied by hyperplasia and displacement of the respiratory epithelium. One mite specimen was an adult female, while all the other specimens were protonymphs. The adult female and one protonymph specimen were identified as Tyrphonothrus sp. Other protonymphs could be identified only at the family level. The obtained partial 18S rDNA sequence of one protonymph was 100% identical to that of Tyrphonothrus maior (NCBI accession No. KY922215). This is the first report of living malaconothrid mites encapsulated in fish gills, and the phenomenon may assume parasitic behaviour. However, the nature of the relationship between the mites and the fish requires further investigations.

RESUMO

Loma acerinae is a xenoma-forming fish microsporidium described from common ruffe Gymnocephalus cernua (Perciformes: Percidae) and also found in Ponto-Caspian gobies (Gobiiformes: Gobiidae). This casts doubt on the strict host specificity of this parasite. The largest subunit RNA polymerase II (rpb1) was used as a genetic marker of the parasite isolated from six host species of Perciformes (G. cernua from the Baltic Sea), Atheriniformes (Atherina boyeri from the Azov Sea) and Gobiiformes (Neogobius spp. and Zosterisessor ophiocephalus from the Black Sea and Ponticola kessleri from the Caspian Sea basin). Two major rpb1 haplogroups were found with 98.5% identity between the groups. Notably, Haplogroup I was associated with Neogobius spp. samples (n = 6) only, whereas Haplogroup II included the samples from other host species (n = 7). These findings confirm the broad distribution and host range of L. acerinae, but also indicate that certain patterns of host-driven intraspecific polymorphism may exist. Furthermore, the study revealed low similarity between the ribosomal RNA gene sequences of L. acerinae and the type species, Loma morhua (as well as other species of the genus). This suggests loose genetic association within the genus, and may raise the need for the taxonomic revision of L. acerinae.

RESUMO

Metacercariae of the zoogonid trematode Steganoderma cf. eamiqtrema ex crab Chionoecetes bairdi caught in the Sea of Okhotsk were described using morphological and molecular-genetic (ITS2 region, 28S rRNA and nd1 genes) data. These are the first molecular-genetic data for the genus Steganoderma. The studied trematodes differed from S. eamiqtrema in having a much larger body size. The phylogenetic analysis based on the 28S rRNA gene supported neither the current taxonomic hypothesis that Steganoderma belongs to the subfamily Lepidophyllinae nor the earlier views that the Steganodermatinae and the Lecithostaphylinae are synonymous. The topology of the phylogenetic tree shows that the Steganodermatinae and the Lecithostaphylinae are independent subfamilies. However, morphological differences between them are obscure. Until morphological evidence for the Steganodermatinae is found, we propose to distinguish the subfamily Lepidophyllinae sensu stricto with the genera Lepidophyllus and Urinatrema, and the subfamily Lecithostaphylinae sensu lato uniting all the other former lepidophyllines. Thus, for now, we propose to consider the Steganodermatinae as a conditional synonym for Lecithostaphylinae sensu lato.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The genus Nematostrigea comprises trematodes parasitising in fish-eating birds of Europe, Africa, and North America. Their life cycle is unknown. PURPOSE: To provide the first description of metacercariae of Nematostrigea serpens serpens, a nominative subspecies of the type species of Nematostrigea, and to record metacercaria of Nematostrigea vietnamiensis, with molecular data. METHODS: Encysted metacercariae of N. serpens serpens and N. vietnamiensis were collected from fish in Russia and Vietnam, respectively, and were processed, identified, and documented using standard morphological techniques. The 28S rRNA gene of metacercariae of both species and the cox1 gene of metacercariae an earlier studied adult of N. serpens serpens were sequenced and used for phylogenetic analysis. RESULTS: Metacercaria of N. serpens serpens have a spatulate body with a foliate forebody and a short hindbody, two long lateral rectilinear pseudosuckers, and the holdfast organ with bifurcated anterior and entire posterior external lobes. The analysis of the cox1and 28S rRNA gene sequences unequivocally showed the conspecificity of metacercariae and adult stage of N. serpens serpens. Based on the 28S rRNA gene sequence-based phylogenetic analysis, the genus Nematostrigea is a sister taxon to the group of strigeid genera Cotylurus + Ichthyocotylurus. Morphological and phylogenetic data demonstrated that N. vietnamiensis does not belong to the genus Nematostrigea and is possibly be affiliated with the crassiphialine trematodes. CONCLUSION: This is the first record of metacercariae of N. serpens serpens. N. vietnamiensis, renamed Prodiplostomulum vietnamiense comb. nov., must be moved to the crassiphialine 'Prodiplostomulum'-type metacercariae group.

RESUMO

The synthesis and NMR structure analysis of a group of oxygenated steroids containing isoxazole, dihydrofuran, tetrahydrofuran rings or enamino carbonyl fragment in the side chain have been fulfilled. The prepared compounds were tested toward several enzymes (human cytochrome P450s CYP17, CYP19, CYP51 and CYP51 of pathogenic fungus Candida glabrata) as their potential inhibitors. A number steroids show a high level affinity (micro- and submicromole) for the enzyme-ligand complexes of the tested compounds with human CYP51, CYP19 and CYP51 of C. glabrata.

RESUMO

Sets of small ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) and large ribosomal DNA (LSU rDNA) sequences were obtained for Philometroides moraveci Vismanis Yunchis, 1994, Philometra kotlani (Molnár, 1969), Philometra rischta Skrjabin, 1923, Philometra cf. obturans (Prenant, 1886) (Philometridae), Sinoichthyonema amuri (Garkavi, 1972), Agrachanus scardinii (Molnár, 1966), Kalmanmolnaria intestinalis (Dogiel Bychowsky, 1934) and Skrjabillanus tincae Shigin Shigina, 1958 (Skrjabillanidae). Phylogenetic analysis of SSU rDNA data shows that dracunculoid nematodes are divided into two well-supported clades designated as Clade I and Clade II, respectively. Clade I includes the type species of the genus Philonema Kuitunen-Ekbaum, 1933, some species from the family Daniconematidae Moravec Køie, 1987 and two subfamilies of skrjabillanids, Skrjabillaninae Shigin Shigina, 1958 and Esocineminae Moravec, 2006. Clade II unites species from the families Dracunculidae Stiles, 1907, Micropleuridae Baylis Daubney, 1926 and Philometridae Baylis Daubney, 1926. Within the Philometridae, there are several well-supported groups of species, one of which unites freshwater Philometra spp. from the Palearctic cyprinids, identified as P. kotlani, P rischta, P. ovata (Zeder, 1803) and P. cyprinirutili (Creplin, 1825). However, the phylogenetic relationships of most philometrids are unresolved. An analysis of partial SSU and LSU rDNA sequences indicates that there is no direct phylogenetic relationship between Agrachanus Tikhomirova, 1971 (type species Skrjabillanus scardinii Molnár, 1966) and Skrjabillanus Shigin Shigina, 1958 (type species Sk. tincae), which means that the genus Agrachanus can be resurrected. Our study confirms that Philonematinae Ivashkin, Sobolev Khromova, 1971 should be elevated to the family rank. We formally establish the family Philonematidae Ivashkin, Sobolev Khromova, 1971 stat. nov. We also suggest combining the superfamilies Dracunculoidea Stiles, 1907 and Camallanoidea Railliet Henry, 1915 into the infraorder Camallanomorpha Roberts, Janovy Nadler, 2013.

RESUMO

Adult opecoelid digeneans consistent with Tellervotrema beringi (Mamaev, 1965) were found in the intestine of the deep-water fish Antimora microlepis Bean collected off the northern Kuril Islands (Russia). Earlier, T. beringi was recorded only in macrourid fish. This is the first record of a species of Tellervotrema Gibson & Bray, 1982 from fishes of the family Moridae (Gadiformes). A partial 28S rRNA gene sequence was obtained for this species and was compared with the available sequences on GenBank from other opecoelids. The phylogenetic analysis did not support the current taxonomic hypothesis that the genus Tellervotrema belongs to the subfamily Podocotylinae Dollfus, 1959. Our results demonstrated that species of this genus formed a clade with those of the genera Mesobathylebouria Martin, Huston, Cutmore & Cribb, 2019 and Abyssopedunculus Martin, Huston, Cutmore & Cribb, 2019. The morphological synapomorphies of the Tellervotrema + (Mesobathylebouria + Abyssopedunculus) clade are currently unclear, and this group does not have an adequate subfamilial classification.

RESUMO

Staphylococcus aureus is a causative agent of different infectious processes, food poisoning, and autoimmune disorders. The horizontal transfer of pathogenic strains can occur from animal to human under both house and farm conditions, and the spread of strains with antibiotic resistance is an existing problem. In addition to the spread of antibiotic-resistant strains in clinics, this problem also exists in veterinary medicine. It is especially important to monitor antibiotic resistance on farms where antibiotics are the standard treatment of animals, which may trigger the spread of antibiotic-resistant strains among animals and to the human population, and these strains can also be distributed in milk products produced by these farms (milk, cheese, and butter). In this work, we investigated 21 S. aureus isolates using whole-genome sequence analysis and tried to establish a relationship between these isolates with the development of bovine mastitis in seven regions of Western Russia. An S. aureus virulence profile was identified. We identified two groups of S. aureus associated with subclinical mastitis, namely, the enterotoxin-positive and enterotoxin-negative groups. The most prevalent factor associated with bovine mastitis in Russia was cytotoxins, including hemolysins and leukocidins. Multidrug resistance strains were investigated, and antibiotic resistance genes were identified. We identified S. aureus ST 97 type as the most common type in the regions in Western Russia. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first in-depth study of a range S. aureus isolates originating from cattle infections in Russia.

RESUMO

Utilization of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) for enhancing growth and development as well as production of essential oil in aromatic plants has been increasingly drawing research interest. In order to assess the AMF effects on different aromatic species, an open-field experiment was carried out using Artemisia dracunculus (tarragon), Lavandula angustifolia (lavender) and Hyssopus officinalis (hyssop). AMF stimulated the growth of tarragon and lavender plants, whereas hyssop showed a slight developmental slowing; nonetheless, a significant increase in essential oil content in the three species was seen. AMF application increased the biomass of A. dracunculus and H. officinalis by 20-35%. No differences in antioxidant activity and phenolics content were recorded at harvest between the control and AMF-inoculated plants, but the latter showed a significant increase in antioxidant status upon storage at high temperature and humidity compared to the untreated control. The enhancement of abiotic stress resistance during storage in plants inoculated with AMF was the highest in A. dracunculus, and the lowest in H. officinalis, while the untreated control plants showed a significant decrease in phenolics, ascorbic acid and chlorophyll content, as well as antioxidant activity, upon the abiotic stress. AMF inoculation differentially affected the mineral composition, increasing the accumulation of Se, I and Zn in A. dracunculus, and decreasing the levels of heavy metals and Co, Fe, Li, Mn in H. officinalis. Based on the outcome of the present research, AMF inoculation resulted in a significant enhancement of the overall performances of A. dracunculus, L. angustifolia and H. officinalis, and also in the improvement of plant antioxidant status upon storage in stress conditions.
